Homeschool Mama’s Journal Week Review

  • In my life this week…
Where do I begin…I’ve been sick, but getting better.  I’ve had a horrible stomach pain and had an upper scope done on Tuesday with biopsy, so I am waiting for the results to see if I have a gluten problem.  I’ve been avoiding gluten anyway for now and knock on wood I feel a little better everyday. I’ve been still doing school with the girls, just in small doses.   I wrote a really raw, emotion filled blog entry to release some of my stress. I want to be intentional, but…
  • In our homeschool this week…
We’ve been working on Math-U-See lessons and some critical thinking skills.  Evelyn is struggling with adding more than 4 numbers…she hates it. The girls are doing lots of reading and writing too.  Trying to maintain the main subjects and mix in some fun learning opportunities when they arise.
  • Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…
RELAX and remember they are only little for so long.  Allow their creative minds to wander and know that they will learn the things they need to know when the time comes.  I think letting them be creative outside is equally as important as textbook stuff.
  • Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…
We are going to our friend’s house for a lunch playdate today. We are very excited and looking forward to getting out with some good friends and fun.  This Mama needs to get out of the coop.  We are scaling back on things we are involved in and focusing on quality time with friends and family for now.  Mabel and Evelyn are still riding weekly, the other 2 want to join in too, waiting for an opening.
  • My favorite thing this week was…
Was selfish, but finally starting to feel a little better and I get a much-needed date night with my hubby tonight!!!!!!
  • My kiddo’s favorite thing this week was…
Horse riding for the older 2, G enjoyed playing with her friends at church, and Vera liked her cuddle time with Mama.
  • Things I’m working on…
So many things…but letting things go that are not in my control.  I am turning it over to God and allowing him to do what He see’s necessary.
Philippians 4:6-7 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
  • I’m cooking…
not too much these days, but I plan on returning soon!

I want to be Intentional, but…

Life has gotten crazy…

I can’t even remember where it started, but certainly a short time after my last post.   I know I can’t plan my pain on all those things, but I am sure it didn’t help.

I like to think that I am strong and I don’t let stressful things get to me, but when we were hit with the situation we had, I guess I wasn’t as strong as I thought.  I know God doesn’t give you what you can’t handle, but at that point I was drowning.  Needless to say a situation that our exchange student put us in was just awful. Long story short, she made a very bad choice, one that was specifically written in the rules not to break and she did.  I had no idea what to do, other than just cry!  I could not believe that she had done the things she did and continued on with it.  (Now, let me just say, we are all sinful and I am not claiming to be perfect.)  She never thought that she would be caught or actually be followed through with the action of being sent home.  We were a wreck, one for this relationship that we had built with her was based on some lies, two, our daughters were going to be devastated that she would be sent home, and three, it was a dumb teenager mistake one that many of us have fallen into.  Why were the rules so strict.  It came to awareness very quickly that it was out of our hands and rules were rules.  I was literally sick.  I worried about her being sent home, worried what this might do to a young girl, worried for her faith and belief.

I wanted her to know that no matter what God still loved her and no sin is worse than another, it’s all sin.  We have gotten to love her as one of our own daughters.  As hurst as we were, we weren’t sure how her parents would handle it, they are Christians also, so we prayed.  I prayed and prayed for God to give her another chance to stay with us, but it wasn’t looking good.  I am all about second chances, but wasn’t sure it was in the cards this time.  The next day the agency called to go over things with me and I asked if it was possible for her to stay.  They pondered it and said yes, but it had never happened before.  My hubby and I had a long talk and decided to have her come back, but with very strict rules.  Needless to say she got to come back into our home with arms wide open.  We have forgiven her, just as God calls us to, but we are being cautious with activities she’s allowed to be involved in.

So, that was big stressing situation #1, then the next day I got a phone call that a family member had passed away.  He had been battling his disease for a long time, but it’s still hard to know that loved ones pass away.  We know he’s in a better place for sure and pain-free.  So, we got our exchange student moved back in and I was off to the funeral.  I was worried the whole time about her about my family, about my Aunt grieving…  It was a beautiful service and great time celebrating his life!  He would have been happy.  At his mass, the priest said something I’ll never forget.  He talked about how time was so important to my Uncle and how he made time for his faith, his family and his friends.  He said how important all these things were to him, which was true.  He said it’s the time now, to make the most of the time you have now b/c we’ll never get it back.  The struck a nerve with me, thinking about my family and our lifestyle.  They are the most important thing to me, my relationship with God first, my hubby and then my girls.  Nobody can take that away from me.

Which brings me to stress #3, feeling like I have to justify why we homeschool to our family.  I know our parents and siblings only want the best for you, but these are our children, our decision and our mighty arrows we are rising for God.  I love them all dearly but it’s tearing me apart trying to please them and feel like we are worthy of making our own choices for the good of girls.  This has put me in a funk for sure.  I have thought of myself as a failure and what-not.  But that’s got to stop.  I love my life right now and would not change it for the world!  Yes, my  girls may not be learning the things that the kids at school are right now and that’s okay with me.  They are only little for so long, and I want to be a huge impact on their lives,  not the government dictated at school.  I want to expose them to the things we feel they are old to handle, not some kid at school, I want to watch their eyes dance and hearts leap when they learn something new and finally grasp it, I want to be the one who exposes them to the truths of this crazy world, not a teacher or staff member and most of all I want to be with my kids and love on them as much possible and whenever I want!

So, bringing it up to the last few weeks…I have a hysterectomy scheduled for March 20 and I am in pain, not sure why.  I have a pain in my upper stomach that will not go away…it’s awful!  So much fun.  I’ve been to ER, no answers.  I think they shouldn’t make you pay if they can’t figure out what’s wrong with you.  😉 Just my .02.  I am going for a scope tomorrow, so please pray for an answer for me, that I am able to get back to “normal” life and begin being intentional with it.

I have found that with all these things going on I’ve fallen into a trap of being lazy with things in general.  (taken this idea of the layout from Joyful Mothering)

Our days have been pretty much Math lessons, spelling, some writing, reading and if I am up for it Bible time.  I know that’s awful to say, but they can pretty do these things independently, while I rest.  I started the year with My Father’s World, but we got tired of the retentiveness of it all.  It got boring and then we were bouncing back and forth between 2 science’s and heck with everything else.  I bought some workbooks at Barnes and Noble and like those, so were doing those for now and yes, they are learning.  I have also discovered we are way to socialized and need to cut back.  Starting now!  We are going to cut back on extra activities until my issues are resolved and have my head back in the game.  We will be doing the basics for now and sprinkle in more fun time at home, maybe invite a friend or two also, nothing in stone though.  I certainly don’t have it all together, but I do know most of all that I love homeschooling my girls and wouldn’t change it for anything.

Well since I’ve been feeling really bad that last 2.5 weeks, my house is not being kept the way I want it.  Sure, everyone pitches in here and there, but it’s not the way I would do it.  I feel like a horrible wife not being able to keep things up to standards.  When my house is a mess, I get out of control…lucky for them I haven’t been able to move around a whole bit.  What irritates me more than anything though is in 2 more weeks, I will be down again after surgery.  I have hired a cleaner to come in next week and then again in April.  If I can get a monthly cleaning, I would be most happy and could keep up better with the day-to-day stuff overall.

I have not been very intentional about spending my daily time with God.  I pray daily for people and thank him for the things provided, but fully engaged I have not been.  I feel like I am missing that deep connection right now and I am craving it.   I know Satan yearns for us to be distracted and lazy and get caught up in other things, which for me can be shopping.  (not good)  I started this blog to keep my intentional and keep my focus on God, my family and I am majorly slacking.  Please help me get back on track and get my relationship with God right first and then the other things will fall into place.

Weight Loss
So far, so good.  I am happy for now.  I am currently down 20lbs.  If I could lose another 15lbs. I will be so excited!  I have not changed my mindset yet though.  I still see this big lump staring back at me.  It’ll take a while to get over that.  But, it’s  a start.

Something I need to do:

Philippians 4,6-7

I have a dream…

Today the girls and I learned more about why people celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. What a man with a compassionate heart.  We watched a video about the house he grew up, which was fun to see.  Check it out.

We learned he was just a regular guy like everyone else, he was a son, husband, father and friend to many.  All he wanted was everyone to be treated equal. The girls found it appalling that there were separate schools, neighborhoods, churches, water fountains and even restaurants to name  a few.  We talked about how it would feel to be told we can use the same restroom if you have straight or curly hair or freckles or no freckles…that’s how dumb it all was.

I am so glad that my girls do not see color as something negative.  They have friends of all colors and are happy that the “laws” are different now.  We love knowing that God made us in HIS image and we are all the same on the inside.

They each did  a presentation about their own dream…

Gretchen has a dream of everyone, people and animals being healthy and everyone has food to eat all the time.

Evelyn’s dream is that there was no bullying.

Mabel and Vera’s dream is that people would respect the environment and take care of the Earth. They also wish that cigarette and drugs were banned.

She was so excited to do her presentation. Mabel did the writing for her.

They were all listening and attentive during our MLK lesson. It was very insightful.

Gretchen’s creations…she even made veggies and fruit out of clay.

  • In my life this week…
We made our last hurrah trip to Disney on Monday and Tuesday.  We stayed over night at Coronado Springs hotel.  It was a nice hotel.  The girls really enjoyed themselves and even got to go swimming in the nice pool.  I was miserably sick with a head cold, but toughed it out.  It was fun to watch the girls in all their excitement. They all got to go on their favorite rides at the parks. Mabel and Evelyn love Rock-n-Roll Coaster, Gretchen loves the People Mover at Magic Kingdom and Vera loves the Merry Go Round.  On our way to Magic Kingdom

We made great family memories with the girls, it was a wonderful year having the Season Pass.  We will do it again in a couple years.  We did minimal school work b/c I was not well.  We kept it to the basic’s, reading, writing, and math. The girls are finishing the week of with a research project.  Each one is picking an insect to do a presentation on.

This is me being REAL

Talking about my word of the year: INTENTIONAL

For me, being intentional means doing things even when I don’t want to because it is what I need to do. Being intentional means having a plan at all times. Being intentional means setting goals. I am not speaking of having plans and setting goals because I believe I have my future all figured out or that I can truly control what happens tomorrow or next week, but I do want to have a plan and set realistic goals because it is one of the ways that lives can change. It is going to be a way for me to move from a comfy place in life to a place of excitement and freedom to fully live the life that God designed for me! There may be times that I go off the path and I need all you help me stay accountable.

So, this is me being real.  These are steps I am making to be Intentional.  These are the things on my heart this week.

Support my hubby is easy I usually think, I think he’s amazing, he’s a hard worker, funny guy, loving Daddy, so it’s easy for me to support him.  I love having a hot dinner ready for him, so we all eat as a family.  I like to do things around the house so he doesn’t have to. (I really do like doing those things) But last night when we were going to bed he put the TV on.  He knows I like noise from the TV to fall asleep to.  It shuts my mind down and makes me not think of all the things I need to do.  Anyway, I flipped on Chelsea Lately, as usual.  I know not the best choice, but sometimes the people make me laugh.  Well he rolled over and said how he couldn’t stand that show and how arrogant she is and he can’t stand hearing her voice.  I thought okay fine I will no longer watch her.  I turned the channel and then shut it off.  I want to be Intentional about supporting my man!

A Bible Study is something I am trying to figure out…I want something good, I would like to do it with a couple other women.  I want it to be about homeschooling, being a Mom, or being a wife, something like that…any ideas.  I would like to put this together and start a group to meet.  I am not sure how to do this?  If anyone has suggestions, I am open to it.

Something else that I’ve been Intentional in is weight loss.  I hate talking about this, since it’s such a sensitive topic for me but here it is.  I’ve struggled with the 30-40lbs for the last ?? years.  I go to bed thinking about being thin and wake up with dreams of being thinner.  It’s on my mind all the time.  I am my worst critic.  I hate so much of my body.  I feel like everyone must just look at my flaws.  I try very hard to never say anything in front of my girls, b/c I don’t want them to ever worry about it later in life.  I feel like when people look at me with my hubby that they must think there is “fat and skinny.”  I never feel good enough.  Trust me, it’s all me.  My husband has NEVER said anything to me.  He tells me all the time how beautiful and lovely I look and I scuff and point out everything wrong.  (I know awful)

So, I decided to make a big change and do a $$ diet.  I felt really guilty b/c my hubby told me to go for it, b/c he wants me to feel good about myself and see what he sees.  So, I decided to join Quick Weight Loss clinic.  I went in for my first meeting and they spent tons of time with me, going over all these things I think about myself.  It hit home…and this is it.  I am going to lose the weight.  This is my year, it’s coming off once and for all!  We went to Disney for 2 days and I still managed to lose 4.5lbs.  Go me!  I was excited and can’t wait to see another big drop!  If you are interested in hearing more about the plan send me a message.  (

So, like I said this is me being real and putting it ALL out there.  Please hold me accountable and push me on!  I am asking for it.

not give up
